Towards the end of my stay in Myanmar (Burma), we decided to visit a Buddhist nunnery in Yangon. The nunnery housed girls and women of many ages, dressed in their pink robes. They are known as student or novice nuns. There seemed to be an emphasis on education, to provide the children with the tools needed to achieve their dreams outside of the nunnery. Here, a young woman is reading from a book, soaking up the bright rays from the sun, during a break, or recess, from classroom lessons.

Girl in the Iraqi Marshes
Heading into southern Iraq towards Basra in 2011, we travelled through the Iraqi Marshlands and came across a number of locals who had made their home here. It was a big contrast to the dry and dusty conditions that we had already travelled through to get here. Whilst we waited for a boat to take us across the waterways, I wandered over to a couple of huts along the water. A dog came out barking towards me, but a small girl followed the dog out and soon reigned it in. Another girl, who I presume was her sister due to their likeness, appeared out from these same huts with a welcoming smile, and I photographed her against the backdrop of the marshes.

Young girl of Kayah State
We were travelling through the remote regions of Kayah State in Myanmar (Burma) and stopped at a small village. After wandering around and soaking up the village life, here, a small girl was standing by a wooden fence giving us an inquisitive look. She was wearing those famous metal rings around her neck, but this is purely for decorative purposes now and is no longer used to “elongate” necks.
